Summary: Presenting to you, the most complex and dangerous AI, second only to Skynet, in movies. This being follows orders to the letter, and it doesn't matter how many people get killed because of it. Or does it to him?
History: Hal 9000 was created as the AI of the massive starship, the Discovery One, meant to investigate bizarre monoliths around Jupiter. Unfortunately, the White House explicitly told Hal that the monoliths need to be kept a secret from the public. Hal got the wrong idea from this, and decided that the crew on the ship needed to be taken out in a fit of paranoia.
Notable Kills: LIFE FUNCTIONS TERMINATED. In seconds, Hal killed three people in their unconscious stupor with a thought.
Final Fate: Hal is eventually stopped when one of the crewmates, David Bowman, deactivates him. But later, upon being found and reactivated 9 years later just in time for the monolith's terraforming of Jupiter, he seems to want to atone for his crimes, and gives some people time to escape from the phenomenon, sacrificing himself in the process. However, like Bowman before him, he becomes a non-corporal being to join his original nemesis.
Powers/Abilities: Hal controls everyone on the Discovery One, and has intelligence greater than any known being on the planet (mastery of languages, lip-reading, chess, and even emotions).
Weakness: Remove some processing stuff from his HQ, and he's dust. That or destroy the ship he's on.
Scariness Factor: 4-Hal as a paranoid AI is the worst thing in space aside from renegade aliens. His chilling monotone, unblinking red eye, and complete control of the very ship you're in makes him a formidable adversary. It's a shame that none of it was his fault in the first place, and he makes up for it in the end. Yes, Hal, you will dream. We won't deny it for you.
Trivia: -Hal was voiced by Douglas Rain, a Canadian actor more well known for his roles on the stage.
-In the early drafts, Hal was named after the Greek philosopher, Socrates. He was even given a female personality named after the Greek god of wisdom, Athena.
